Timber Preservation

When moisture reaches structural or decorative timber, the priority is to understand both the damage and its source. We can support treatment, repair and reinstatement as part of a wider property preservation plan.

What we can help with

A solution built around the property.

Treatment and repair support for timber affected by moisture, decay or wood-boring insects.

  • Wet and dry rot assessment
  • Woodworm treatment
  • Affected timber removal and repair
  • Moisture source investigation
  • Reinstatement and finishing

Why diagnosis matters

Visible damp or mould does not automatically tell you the underlying cause. Moisture can enter from the ground, through external defects, from leaks, or build up internally through condensation.

Our approach is to inspect the clues, explain what is most likely happening and scope the remedial work accordingly.

Common questions

Timber Preservation FAQs

Clear answers to the questions we are most often asked before a survey or remedial project.

Still unsure? Book a free survey
01 What is the difference between wet rot and dry rot?

Both are forms of fungal timber decay, but they favour different moisture conditions and can behave differently within a building. Correct identification matters because the repair may involve both moisture control and removal or treatment of affected timber.

02 Do old woodworm holes mean I still have an active infestation?

Not necessarily. Historic flight holes can remain long after activity has stopped. Fresh frass, new holes, insect evidence and the condition and moisture content of the timber all help determine whether treatment is required.

03 Will damaged timber always need to be replaced?

No. Replacement depends on the extent of decay and whether the timber has lost structural integrity. Sound timber may be retained and treated, while badly weakened sections may need repair or replacement.

04 Is fixing the moisture source part of timber preservation?

It should be. Timber decay is strongly linked to moisture, so treating the timber without correcting leaks, damp or ventilation problems can allow the conditions that caused the damage to continue.
